The addition of cheekpieces for the first time helped eek out sufficient improvement and the surface at Chelmsford proved to his liking too.
In a messy race, Swordbill showed plenty of courage and stamina after swinging wide on the home turn, eventually prevailing by three parts of a length from Refrain.
