Newtown Duke got off the mark by defying top weight over the straight mile at Newcastle under Dougie Costello.
Dougie got serious with the favourite from before the final two furlongs. Newtown Duke responded generously to pressure all the way to the line.
It was only in final strides that he got the better of a sustained tussle with Powerful Response, getting the verdict by a head.
That victory was our 71st on the flat this year in the UK – a new record for the yard!
